This meeting was organized by Laos’ Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (MLSW) as the Chairperson of the Disaster Management (DM) Law Committee, chaired by Deputy Director General Vilayphong Sisomvang, and attended by all members of the DM Law Committee including Lao Red Cross.

Total attendance was 40 people (F = 14; M = 26).  The purpose of the meeting was: (1) presentation of IFRC on disaster risk management principles, international and regional agreements related to disaster risk management, available IFRC disaster law tools that can be used to guide the legal drafting, examples of best practices on disaster laws; and (2) discussion among DM Law Committee members on the outline of the DM Law

The key achievement from this support is the sensitization of all DM Law Committee members on key considerations for effective disaster laws, prevention and response  to SGBV in disasters, and other PGI concerns in an disaster context. IFRC and Lao Red Cross’s collaboration in the provision of  the technical support to the DM Law development was also highlighted.
